What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?
The title “marriage and family therapist” (MFT) can be misleading since MFT's not only work with couples and families, but they work with individuals too. The title is more about how MFT's work with clients than who they work with.
I chose to become an MFT for a number of reasons. I believe that considering the influence of a client’s relationships can help the therapist and client create a plan that is effective and realistic. The MFT graduate program I chose was more demanding and intensive than many other counseling programs, and I felt it would better prepare me for my career. Additionally the internship was more extensive, both in length and number of hours required, which gave me a chance to expand my skills pre-graduation.
For more information on MFT's, please read the FAQs at the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
